How to Pitch The Long Views

If you have read the Content page and this sounds like you, here is some guidance for writers interested in pitching essays to The Long Views. We aim to publish insightful and original work; these pointers will help you craft a successful pitch.

1. Preparation: Understand Our Content and Context

  • Familiarize Yourself: Regularly read our published essays to grasp our editorial voice, scope, and style. We seek thoughtfulness and truth in Politics, literature reviews, science, history, and social events. We do not publish fiction.

  • Ensure Originality: Before pitching, research your proposed topic. Using search engines (like Google) to confirm your idea or argument offers a fresh perspective and hasn't been addressed similarly recently.

2. Crafting Your Pitch

  • Argument-Driven Pieces (Opinion/Analysis): Your pitch must present a clear, concise, and compelling argument. We favor non-obvious viewpoints that challenge conventional wisdom and avoid partisan assumptions. Evidence of preliminary research strengthens your pitch.

  • Reported Pieces/Dispatches: Clearly articulate the focus of your reporting and what unique insights or understanding it will yield.

  • Pitch Format: Summarize your idea directly in the email body, even if attaching a complete draft. The pitch should stand alone as a description of the piece.

  • Your Background: Include a one-to-two-sentence professional bio. Links to 1-2 relevant published clips are helpful (personal blog posts are acceptable).

3. Submission Protocol

  • Simultaneous Submissions: Please inform us if your pitch is being considered for other publications. For non-urgent pieces, we prefer approximately one week of exclusive consideration.

  • Follow-Ups: We strive to respond to all pitches but cannot always manage due to volume. You may send one follow-up email if you haven't received a response within about a week. After that, please assume we have passed.
